Prozac is one of the world's most widely prescribed antidepressants.

How Prozac works

Many scientists believe that an imbalance in serotonin, a neurotransmitter, may be an important factor in the development and severity of depression. PROZAC may help to correct this imbalance by increasing the brain's own supply of serotonin.

How to take Prozac

The general recommendation is to take PROZAC in the morning. PROZAC can be taken with or without food. If you miss a dose, don't take a double dose. Just continue with your next scheduled dose.

Prozac precautions

A rash can be a sign of a serious medical condition. See your doctor immediately if you develop a rash while taking PROZAC. Also, you should not take PROZAC at the same time as or within 2 weeks if stopping a type of antidepressant medication known as an MAO inhibitor. Don't take MAO inhibitors for at least 5 weeks after stopping the PROZAC depression medicine.

What to tell your doctor

Tell your doctor if you have ever been told you had Bipolar Disorder ("Manic Depression") or have had a "manic" or "psychotic" episode.

Prozac side effects

Some people experience side effects like nausea, difficulty sleeping, drowsiness, anxiety, nervousness, weakness, loss of appetite, tremors, dry mouth, sweating, decreased sex drive, impotence, or yawning.
