Prilosec Use

Prilosec is a type of medication known as an acid pump inhibitor. It's used to help relieve heartburn symptoms in patients diagnosed with ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid.

How Prilosec works

Prilosec works by shutting off tiny acid pumps in your stomach. This reduces the chance of acid backing up into the esophagus, thus eliminating symptoms like heartburn and or difficulty swallowing.

How to take Prilosec

Your doctor should tell you how much and how often to take Prilosec.Prilosec is available in 20 mg capsules. The normal prescribed dose for Prilosec is one 20 mg capsule before a meal. Do not open, chew, or crush Prilosec capsules. Swallow each Prilosec capsule whole.

Prilosec precautions

If you have liver disease or a metabolic disorder your doctor may not recommend that you take Prilosec. Also, Prilosec may interfere with certain medications. Inform your doctor about all the prescription and nonprescription medications you are using.

What to tell your doctor

Before you begin taking Prilosec, tell your doctor about:

• Nonprescription and prescription medications you are taking.
• If you are pregnant or nursing.
• If you are under the age of 18.

Prilosec side effects

Prilosec may cause side effects in some patients. The most common side effects include headache, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Other side effects that occur less often include dizziness, constipation, weakness, back pain, cough, skin rash, and cold symptoms. If you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives), stop taking Prilosec and seek emergency medical attention.
